Pace was a packhorse in Supai, Arizona, used to carry tourists gear in and out of the Grand Canyon under unspeakable conditions of abuse and starvation. Two friends of Sunrise were on vacation when they witnessed this, and worked tirelessly to rescue Pace and raise awareness about the abuse of Havasupai pack animals, which has been occurring for over 40 years. Pace began his long recovery at Coconino Humane Society in Arizona. He was several hundred pounds underweight, had pneumonia, various skin infections from untreated wounds, and intestinal infections from severe malnourishment. Once stable enough to travel, Pace was transported to Sunrise Horse Rescue, to begin his new life. He is now happy, healthy, and gladly accepts all of the affection and treats he can get!
